What Slack and Asana cost a small business in 2026, with the maths shown

A 12-person team on Slack Pro and Asana Starter pays for 15 Asana seats. That’s the detail most people miss when they work out the Slack and Asana cost for small business use, and it’s why we’ve done the sums properly here rather than multiplying one price by headcount.

We used to do this sum ourselves. Before Klusko we ran a 12-person business and paid for a chat app and a task app, and the renewal email was always a little higher than anyone remembered agreeing to. So here’s the arithmetic in full, with the working visible, for three team sizes and a few awkward ones in between.

The prices we’re working from

Every figure below comes from the official pricing pages, checked on 25 September 2026, in US dollars per user per month. Yearly billing means you pay for twelve months up front at the lower rate.

Why these two plans? Slack Pro is the cheapest plan with unlimited message history (the free plan shows 90 days). Asana Starter is the cheapest paid plan, and it’s the one that adds a timeline view. Asana’s free plan covers only 2 users as of September 2026, so any team of three or more is paying.

Prices change. If you’re reading this in 2027, check the vendors’ pages before you quote our numbers to your finance person.

The gap between the two billing options is $240 a year at five people, $480 at ten and $1,200 at twenty-five. Monthly billing is the price of being able to leave, which is worth something if you’re not sure yet. It’s rarely worth $1,200.

These are the tidy cases, though. All three sizes land exactly on an Asana seat step. Most real teams don’t.

Where Asana’s seat steps bite

Asana sells 2 to 5 seats, then steps of 5. So you buy 5, 10, 15, 20 and upwards in fives, whatever your headcount.

The six-person team is the painful one. You hire your sixth person and your Asana bill doubles, from $54.95 to $109.90 a month.

Now add Slack for the 12-person team, where Slack charges per actual person: 12 × $7.25 = $87.00, plus 15 × $10.99 = $164.85. That’s $251.85 a month, or $3,022.20 a year, on yearly billing. On monthly billing it’s $105.00 + $202.35 = $307.35 a month.

We find per-seat buckets annoying. They make a hire feel like a pricing decision, and they punish exactly the size of business that’s growing one person at a time. monday.com does something similar, selling seats in buckets of 3, 5, 10, 15 and so on.

The cost that isn’t on either invoice

Two apps means two lots of admin. When someone joins, you invite them twice. When someone leaves, you remove them twice, and the one you forget is usually the task app, where they keep a paid seat and a view of every client project until someone notices at renewal. Two renewal dates as well, each with its own card on file.

And there’s the gap itself. A job gets agreed in a Slack thread on Thursday afternoon; somebody has to copy it into Asana, with a due date and an owner, or it lives only in the thread. We don’t have a figure for how often that goes wrong in your business, and we’d be suspicious of anyone who claimed one. In ours it was often enough that we built a product about it. Going up a plan

If you outgrow Starter, Asana’s next plan is Advanced, which is $24.99 per user yearly or $30.49 monthly as of September 2026. Slack Business+ is $15 or $18. For ten people on both higher plans, yearly billing, that’s 10 × $15 + 10 × $24.99 = $399.90 a month. We don’t think most teams under 50 need either, but some do, and it’s as well to know where the ceiling is.

What the cheaper setups cost

Here’s the same exercise for the combinations we hear about most, all per month, as of September 2026. Trello Standard is $5 or $6 per user, ClickUp Unlimited is $7 or $10 and includes chat, and Klusko Team is £5 or £6 per person.

For completeness, Slack Pro plus monday.com Standard for ten people is $192.50 a month yearly, or $227.50 monthly.

What you give up for the lower price

Cheaper isn’t better if the tool can’t do the job, so briefly.

Trello Standard doesn’t have the calendar, timeline or table views; those are on Premium at $10 or $12.50. You still need Slack for chat.

ClickUp Unlimited has chat and Gantt charts in one app. Its free plan has unlimited users but only 60 MB of storage in total, and chat is trial-only there, so budget for the paid plan from the start. We’ve written a longer Klusko vs ClickUp comparison if you’re weighing the two.
