Klusko vs Basecamp: a Basecamp alternative for small businesses

Klusko vs Basecamp is a closer match than the other comparisons on this site, because Basecamp also puts tasks and chat in the same app. The differences are in the details. Basecamp charges a flat monthly price and limits how many projects you can run; Klusko charges per person and doesn’t limit projects on paid plans. Basecamp has docs and message boards; Klusko has more views and more structure on each task. If your team is large, calm and runs a handful of long projects, Basecamp is the better fit and you should probably stay. Where Basecamp is better

Flat pricing. As of September 2026, Basecamp Studio is $59 a month for unlimited users and ten projects, which already undercuts ten people on Klusko Team (£50, about $70). At forty people Klusko would cost £200 a month billed yearly and Basecamp would still cost $59. If your headcount is high and your project count is low, Basecamp wins on price and it isn’t close.

It also has things we don’t. Message boards and docs cover the written side of a company, which Klusko doesn’t try to do, and Hill Charts show roughly how far along a piece of work is. Basecamp has been around a long time and its phone apps are finished and on both stores. Ours is an iPhone app in testing, and we don’t have an Android app yet.

Client access is good too: Basecamp lets you invite clients into a project. Klusko guests work in a similar way: they see the projects you add them to. They can also read public channels, so keep the team’s own chat in private ones.

Where Klusko is better

Project limits. Studio caps you at 10 projects and Pro at 25. That’s fine for an agency with six retainers. It’s not fine for a building firm with thirty open jobs, or a charity that runs a project per grant. Klusko’s paid plans have no project limit, and you pay for the people you have, with no buckets. Tasks have more structure in Klusko. Each one has a start date, a due date, one of four priority levels, tags, subtasks and custom fields you define per project. You can look at the same project as a Board, a List, a Table, a Calendar or a Workload chart, which shows each person’s open tasks against the team average. Chat works more like Slack. Basecamp organises chat around projects; in Klusko you make whatever channels you want (one for the office, one per site, one for the van rota), with threads, reactions, a Mentions view and a Threads view. Klusko vs Basecamp: who should pick which

Pick Basecamp if you have a large team and a small number of long projects, especially if written announcements and shared docs are how your company talks. Android users will also be better off there for now.

Pick Klusko if you run many projects at once, want tasks with priorities and custom fields, and would like chat channels that aren’t tied to a single project. Say you run a fifteen-person events company with twenty events on the go. In Basecamp that’s the Pro plan, $99 a month with a 25-project cap. In Klusko it’s £75 a month billed yearly, with no cap.
